The Immobilizer chip is an RFID device that carries a permanent ID #. The immobilizer in the instrument cluster is told what that number is when the key is matched to the vehicle. If you swap this chip to a new key housing you would be using the same RFID chip as your old key. As far as the Immobilizer is concerned it is the same Key. No change. I was able to remove the chip from my key fob but I glued it to the steering column just under the key slot. Now I can have a key made anywhere and it will start my car.
When the RFID chip is recognized, the Immobilizer module sends a random code back to the key. The module and the key perform a verification via a matching calculation. When the proper key is recognized and authorized, the IMMO module sends the start authorization to the ECM. Not sure about the VW ones, but the aftermarket ones are silly easy to get the chips out of. If there is a red colored spot on the fob, it is a drawer you can push open to slip the chip out of. It also depends on the tools you have.

Anyone know a good source for those with working rfid chips? Jetta97 -- thanks for the tip on the coolant sensor. It starts to read once the engine is slightly warmed up, but before that there's no reading (I watched it using VCDS).

When the proper key is recognized and authorized, the IMMO module sends the start authorization to the ECM. This remote has a different frequency matched only to Golf IV Jetta IV Passat and New Beetle. It has the chrome bar and a computer chip. You can buy the Vagtacho software from me and do it with your laptop or you will need a VW dealer or Automotive Locksmith to program the engine computer to recognize the key.
The immobilizer chip does not need a battery because it's an RFID (radio frequency identification) chip energized by the antenna in the ignition key slot. The RFID chip range is about 1" from the ignition key slot when in a key (through plastic) and about 3" when bare.
VW key fob programming instructions will vary depending on your vehicle’s model and model year; you can reprogram some VW key fobs at home, and some require the use of specialized tools at a dealership like ours.
