I just use a SM adapter with I think a XD card, and it works fine for me. I also use the Open Electribe editor to organize my samples and sequences. I have an ESX-1 (Smart Media) and the big reason I barely use it is the sample management. The editor is pretty terrible but it's free so I can't complain. I also had this annoying issue with samples disappearing off the memory card leaving holes in patches. You do not need software to load onto the es-1. You just need a smartmedia card and a reader then use some kind of software to prep sample but even then you can get free audio editors to do that. Make sure the samples are 8 or 16 bit pcm 32khz wav or aiff files. Rename them 00 thru 99.
